Hiking Gothic Mountain in Crested Butte, Colorado

Hiking Gothic Mountain: Adventure Awaits

If you’re thinking about hiking Gothic Mountain, I’ve got some helpful pointers and tips to share with you! This is one of my favorite hikes in the state of Colorado, especially in springtime. Gothic Mountain is located a mile past Gothic Town, just outside scenic Crested Butte, Colorado. The hike begins on the popular Trail 403, which is also one of the hardest mountain biking trails in the area.

Gothic Mountain is part of the Elk Mountain Range in the Rocky Mountains, and its summit sits at an impressive 12,631 feet. It’s not a Colorado 14er (learn how to hike your first 14er here), but it offers some thrills of its own! The trail is just over 8 miles roundtrip and takes you past 2 false summits before reaching the actual summit.

This was my second summit while staying in Colorado for one month to hike. The views are unbeatable as you make your way out of the treeline and up the ridgeline up the mountain. I won’t sugarcoat it—it’s a steep hike once the trail splits off from the 403. Take your time and make sure you pack the appropriate amount of water, food and layers.

If you’re looking for great places to stay in nearby Crested Butte, check out the Crested Butte House. It’s a great mountainside vacation rental that I can wholeheartedly recommend!
