Dancing Light
Light pours into the snow covered mountains that grip the coastline on the Antarctic peninsula. Antarctica is home to three major mountain ranges. The first is the Antarctandes, aka the Antarctic Peninsula Cordillera, which runs the full length of the Antarctic Peninsula in what’s known as Graham and Palmer Land.
Research Stations Aren’t Just for People
Antarctica, is not only a captivating destination but also a hub for scientific exploration. With a staggering 70 research stations operated by 55 countries, this icy continent offers a platform for groundbreaking research and discovery. These stations serve as vital bases for scientists from around the world to delve into various fields, such as climate change, marine biology, geology, and astrophysics. From studying the impact of melting ice shelves to unraveling the secrets of Antarctica’s unique wildlife, these research stations are at the forefront of scientific advancement, and often taken over by penguins.
You Looking at me?
Gentoo penguins are one of 17 penguin species in the world and there are said to be around 600,000 of them in the Antarctic region. They make thier nests in ice free areas and like many birds mate for life.
Reflections over Port Lockroy
The stunning reflections of light over the inner bay in Port Lockroy. Antarctica may be known for wild weather, but many days look like this. With calm seas, light clouds and pristine snow.
Antarctic Dessert
Fog and low lying clouds often drape the tops of the mountain peaks creating stunning and otherworldly imagery for the eyes to behold. So often mornings and evenings in Antarctica are pierced by cloud inversions that almost eat the sky, and cover the sea, making for a hard to decipher landscape of fog, snow and mountain peak.
A Smiling Seal
The southern Antarctic Elephant Seal is the largest seal species on earth, and in the polar spring they begin to gather on beaches to breed and raise their young. The male seals grow a bulbous appendage on thier heads and can reach up to 8,000 lbs and dive up to 7,000 feet deep. This male is not full grown but merely a teen.
A Whale Wave
Summers bring several species of whale into cold waters of Antarctica. Among the majestic creatures that grace these icy waters, the humpback whales stand out with their awe-inspiring presence. Known for their acrobatic displays and haunting songs, humpbacks frequent the Antarctic region, drawing awe and admiration from all who witness their magnificent presence. As you embark on a journey to this frozen wonderland, be prepared to be mesmerized by the grace and beauty of these gentle giants as they navigate through the pristine white landscapes.
Blue Hour meets the Sun
If you want to see the sunset or the sunrise in this place you have to stay up late or rise quite early. With almost 24 hours of light in the summer months along the Antarctic peninsula, it is no truer here that the early bird gets the worm. As the sun rises just slightly from the horizon, the white snow and ice blue waters reflect with color and light.
The Colony
Cuverville island is graced with one of the largest Gentoo penguin colonies in Antarctica. Thousands of birds build nests, and look for mates as others wander along penguin highways or hunt in the frozen seas.

Ice Paradise
Paradise bay is one of the most beautiful inlets in the Antarctic peninsula. Surrounded by mountains and full of icebergs made of ancient ice, that reflect against the bright blue skies.
Can you Feed Me?
Elephant seal pups are quite possibly my favorite type of seal. Usually quite plump from feeding on milk for several weeks and always hungry for more. In the summer season they can be seen waiting patiently for mom to return so they can satiate their hunger. Often seen burping, hiccuping or farting and lazily scratching here and there.
Goodbye and Good Riddance
Old fishermen’s boats sit beached inside the crater of Deception island. This is the crater of an active volcano and the former killing and processing site for thousands of whales and seals. These are the remains of a cruel and thankfully no longer allowed practice of whaling and sealing. The Antarctic treaty brought together dozens of countries to form an alliance and protect Antarctica and its waters from hunting and pollution. This treaty also helps manage tourism practices in and around the continent and keep the place as pristine as possible.
Come Fly with Me
The albatross is one of the most impressive bird species on earth, able to fly for up to 13 months, and a constant friend to ship passengers as you near areas of land and mountain in the Antarctic region.
Snowy Sheathbills
The snowy sheathbill is the only landbird native to Antarctica, not having webbed feet like most if not all other birds in the Antarctic region, the sheathbill does not swim, or dive in the water for food. Living solely off what it finds on land. Finding them nearby research stations where they can find scraps from humans is quite common.
Smooth Sailings
One thing I never got used to in Antarctica is how different each and every day looked. With an ever changing scenery from weather, light and locale. It is truly a pristine and stunning place.
The Perfect Pose
Chinstrap penguins are easily recognizable for the thin black line that runs under the face. The have great numbers in the Anartic region and are one of the least threatened species of penguin. Often seen propelling themselves along the snow on thier bellies, this one slid over a few piles of poo on the way home.
A Dark History
Antarctica’s history is dark, with centuries of sealing and whaling that almost decimated the entire population of fur seals, and several species of whale. These practices went on until as recently as the 1980’s, when a moratorium on whaling was finally enacted in Antarctic waters. These ruins are what remain of one of the biggest whaling stations located on Deception island.
Obstacle Course of Icebergs
Every day and almost every moment in Antarctica offers something truly unique and different to behold. With constant changes in the light the reflections of the ice and snow and sea are always moving. No visit here would ever be the same.
A Sledding Hill into the Sea
Deep beneath the surface of the icy waters off Antarctica, lies a hidden world of wonder. The iceberg, a magnificent natural phenomenon, showcases its breathtaking beauty in two distinct shades: white and blue. The white icebergs, like majestic sculptures, grace the pristine landscape, while the blue icebergs, with their ethereal glow, captivate the imagination. These frozen giants stand as a testament to the awe-inspiring power of nature and beckon you to explore their enchanting realm. Embark on a journey to Antarctica and witness the mesmerizing allure of these magnificent ice formations.

Two Gentoo penguins stand in lightly falling snow, after emerging from the icy waters in the South Shetland Islands. The South Shetlands are teaming with wildlife, the last major set of islands before reaching the peninsula of Antarctica itself.
