Hiking Teocalli Mountain in Crested Butte, Colorado
Hiking Teocalli Mountain was my first peak of the summer in Colorado and it’s a hike I highly recommend. At more than 13,200 feet, the snow-peaked mountain lies in the Rocky Mountains right outside Crested Butte, Colorado. In the video below, I’m sharing some tips for hiking Teocalli Mountain and successfully reaching the summit!
Here’s a quick summary of some of the tips and advice I cover in the video.
The trail begins at the end of a 4WD drive road, about 5 miles in length. A high-clearance vehicle is a must for accessing this trail. Driving here in my Jeep took us through ponds of mud, through a river and over lots of rocks.
The trail begins by following the Teocalli Ridge Trail, which can also be mountain biked or traveled by horse. At the top of the ridge trail, I hung a left and headed up a rudimentary trail to the summit. Following animal prints most of the way, the summit ascent is steep, with lots of loose scree—watch your footing. Trekking poles and waterproof shoes are a must for hiking Teocalli Mountain.
Also worth noting, Crested Butte is the wildflower capital of Colorado and a great place to spend a few days or weeks mountain biking and hiking. For great places to stay nearby, check out the Crested Butte House—it’s a mountainside chalet offering ski-in/ski-out access in the winter and mountain biking right from the back door in summer.
