My Hotel Lago Grey Review: A Steppe Above the Rest
My first impression of Hotel Lago Grey sets the tone for my visit to Torres Del Paine National Park. I’m here to hike the W Trek, and the hotel is just spectacular. I’ve never had views quite like the ones out my window! Mountain peaks rise behind the waters of Lago Grey, dotted with jagged, sky-blue icebergs and rippling with the howling wind like they’re alive. A massive piece of glacier broke off about a week before I arrived and floated just off the beach from the hotel. The scenery here is incredible and inspired me to start taking photos as soon as I arrived.
Situated in Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chilean Patagonia, I chose this hotel to stay among the park’s stunning mountain, glacier, grassland, and lake scenery. Nestled among the mountains along the side of Lago Grey, it’s tucked into the hillside and almost hidden from sight as you approach.
My First Impressions of Hotel Lago Grey
As a first-time visitor, I was instantly whisked into the stunning beauty of the surroundings here—the main lodge sits just above the water’s edge with a never-ending bank of floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel totally immersed in nature. The windows open up to the water beyond, putting you face-to-face with the massive Grey Glacier as it descends into the lake.
This is one of the most spectacular hotels I’ve ever stayed at (and I’ve traveled a lot!). The General Manager, Juan Pablo, immediately checked in with me and ensured I was well taken care of. I had a delightful dinner and I could have stayed in my bed for hours, just taking in the scenery from my window.
In the morning, I enjoyed a breakfast of fresh fruit with delectable bread and jam while I sat at the picture windows. A fox and her three babies emerged from under a tree outside, just beyond the building’s edge, and bathed in the morning sunlight. Nearby, a woodpecker pounded on a tree while other wildlife woke up to the sun’s warm rays. I felt like Snow White having breakfast in this picture-perfect world!
Hotel Lago Grey features commanding views and easy access to some of my favorite areas of the park. Combined with the excellent service, plush and comfortable rooms, their commitment to sustainability, and fantastic food, I wholeheartedly recommend making this your base for Torres del Paine adventures.
I’ll dig into the details of my stay below—location, room quality, food and drink, excursions and activities, wildlife, getting there, cost, and more—to share what you can expect when you visit Hotel Lago Grey.
Where Is Hotel Lago Grey?
Hotel Lago Grey sits on the southern shore of Lago Grey in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile and faces the hulking Grey Glacier. Overlooking the lake and glacier, it’s surrounded by towering granite peaks, lush forests, and pristine rivers. This is a prime location for nature lovers and adventurers with close proximity to a number of activities and excursions (I’ll talk more about that in just a bit).
- 45-minute drive to Great Fall and Lake Nordenskjöld
- 1.5-hour walk to Chorrillo Los Salmones in the Pingo River Valley
- 2-hour walk to Mirador Ferrier/Ferrier Mount lookout
- 50-minute drive to Lago Pehoé
- 52-minute drive to Salto Chico Falls
- 70-minute drive to Salto Grande
How to Get There
Reaching Hotel Lago Grey involves a scenic drive from Puerto Natales, which can take about 2-3 hours. Some parts of the road are rough, so you may want to rent a 4WD vehicle. The hotel is also accessible via organized tours from major cities like Punta Arenas, and can be reached by bus from Laguna Amarga on the other side of Torres Del Paine twice daily depending on the season.
You have the option to add a pickup and drop-off to and from the hotel when you book. If you want to book private transportation to the hotel from Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales, the hotel offers an all-inclusive program that includes it with year-round availability. If you’re traveling to the park by bus, reserve your transportation to the hotel in advance by emailing navegacion@lagogrey.com.
About Torres del Paine National Park
Hotel Lago Grey sits in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park, which covers 242,242 hectares—almost 600,000 acres! Part of the park was designated as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978. It’s famous for the Cordillera del Paine mountains, the French Valley, the Grey Glacier (right outside my hotel), mighty waterfalls, and Los Cuernos del Paine (“Paine horns”). Colorful flowers, including spikes of purple lupine, calceolaria with mushroom-like blooms, and seven types of orchids, blanket the plains and mountainsides.
Many of the mountain peaks in the park have not been accurately measured, so there are some variations in reported altitudes. One exception is the park’s highest peak: the majestic 2,884-meter (9462’) Cerro Paine Grande, which has been measured with GPS instrumentation.
Torres del Paine National Park is one of the last remaining places where wild guanacos, relatives of llamas and alpacas, can be found—they even spit when threatened! Pumas, foxes, and wild horses also make their homes in the open plains of the park. Over 100 bird species have been recorded here, including the mighty Andean condor and flightless Darwin’s rhea.
What Are the Rooms Like at Hotel Lago Grey?
The rooms at Hotel Lago Grey are modern and designed for a blend of comfort and complete immersion in nature. There are 60 total guest rooms to ensure you get to experience a laid-back, serene stay without crowds. Expect contemporary accommodations with breathtaking views of Lago Grey and the surrounding mountains.
All rooms at the hotel are equipped with central heating, WiFi, and large windows to bring the beauty of the outside in.
- Book a premium room for the best floor-to-ceiling views of the park—I highly recommend it!
- Standard rooms are just as comfy and well-appointed, but your views could be obstructed a bit by trees.
WiFi is available throughout the hotel, but the remote location means the hotel uses satellite internet that may have a stronger signal in the communal areas. However, I should note that I didn’t have any issues connecting during my stay!
Important: You’ll need a voltage converter/power adapter to charge and use your electronic devices in your room. Chile uses type C and L sockets (two or three rounded pins), while the U.S. uses type A and B (two flat, parallel pins and two parallel pins with a third grounding pin). Chilean outlets run on 220V, while U.S. outlets and devices run on 120V.
What Are the Dining Options at Hotel Lago Grey?
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and selection of food and drinks at Hotel Lago Grey. Being so remote, I just didn’t expect the excellent onsite dining and drinks options, from the abundant choices on the breakfast buffet to the ambient restaurant and bar with vaulted ceilings.
Hotel Lago Grey focuses on local Patagonian cuisine, always featuring fresh, regional ingredients. Dining with a view of the glacier is a highlight and provides an unforgettable culinary experience in the heart of the untamed wilderness.
- Breakfast buffet: Open every morning at sunrise, you can fuel up with fresh baked goods, scrambled eggs and omelets, fruit salad, yogurt, and tarts. Coffee, tea, milk, and juice are also available on the buffet.
- Restaurant: Choose from two daily local Patagonian specials, like wraps, lamb, salads, pan-seared scallops, salmon, and steaks, along with ample vegan and vegetarian options. Dinner is perfectly paired with Chilean wines in a rustic-yet-elevated atmosphere with ceiling-to-floor windows that offer amazing views of the beach and mountains.
- Bar & Lounge: A full array of cocktails, mocktails, wines, craft beers, and snacks with excellent views make a visit to the bar especially fulfilling after a long day of adventure in Torres del Paine.
You can take advantage of all these dining options by paying per meal or by opting for the all-inclusive experience, which includes daily buffet breakfast, lunch or box lunch, and dinner at the restaurant. You’ll also be able to access an open bar with house wine, standard beer, and standard beverages with this option.
What Activities and Wildlife Are Nearby?
There are tons of excursions and activities available near the hotel, with many hikes beginning right on the property. Glacier tours on the Grey III boat, exhilarating hikes to nearby waterfalls and mountain overlooks, and chances to explore the park’s diverse ecosystems make this the perfect base for any Torres del Paine adventure.
You can book a number of excursions with the hotel and visit some of the park’s most breathtaking areas with a guide. From glacier tours and scenic driving tours to challenging hikes, there’s something for everyone nearby.
- Take a 3-hour tour on the Grey III boat to see icebergs, Grey Glacier, and views of forests, Paine Grande, and Paine Massif
- Choose a half-day excursion to Great Fall and Horns Lookout, a 45-minute drive and short hike from the hotel through Patagonian steppe with views of Lake Nordenskjöld and the surrounding mountains
- Take a half-day trip to Condor Lookout, a 45-minute drive toward the middle of the park followed by a hike with Paine River and Lago Pehoé views before reaching the Condor Lookout point

- Choose full-day adventures to see wildlife, Great Fall, Paine River Falls, Laguna Azul, Pingo Waterfall, Lago Toro Lookout, and more.
The area is absolutely teeming with wildlife, as I discovered from the very first day of my stay with animals congregating right outside my window. The wildlife throughout this part of the park includes Andean condors, llama-like guanacos roaming the pampas plains, and the occasional puma roaming the shrub-blanketed steppes, forests, and mountain trails at dawn and dusk.
Bring the Right Gear for Your Itinerary
When you stay at Hotel Lago Grey, you’re probably going to be planning lots of adventures and day hikes. Make sure you bring the right gear along—comfortable shoes for hiking, gloves, waterproof layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars to spot wildlife and distant mountains, and anything else you’ll need to be comfortable outdoors.
